Who We Are

First Dimension Records is a student run and managed label based out of Millersville University that produces and releases new independent artists as well as providing an umbrella for other forms of music industry endeavors. We are dedicated to community outreach, maintaining a learning environment, creating a quality product that is competitive with other independent labels, creative problem solving and growth through experience and the actions of dedicated students.

Where Did We Come From

First Dimension Records was founded in 2004 as a class project for the Music Business and Technology majors. The class produced a compilation album entitled “Music and Hope” in the same year. “Music and Hope” became the second most successful album released by the label. The spring of that year the group became a student organization and took off releasing 4 albums within a year and a half time period. As graduations took place, the label lost its vision and leadership and in summer 2005 went dormant.

With the leadership gone, a freshman in the incoming class of 2010 found an opportunity and after gathering a team of motivated peers, restructured the label in spring 2007. The label began work on a project that would later become “Patchwork”. The spring 2007 project began as a charity album for students serving in the military. The project took a turn when new artists became available. The project became “Patchwork” in spring 2008 and was rounded out by two other unique artists. “Patchwork” was released November 2008 with two sold out shows in Millersville and Lancaster from which the label gained esteem with the local communities as well as beginning our break into the independent music world. “Patchwork” is available at major independent retailers in the Philadelphia area as well as digitally on 5 continents via ITunes and Amazon.

Over the period from spring 2007 to fall 2008, First Dimension Records developed new departments, including our highly rated high school outreach program. During this time we began reaching out to students in other degree programs which led to the development of our video and new media department within the label.

Where are we Going

In coming semesters First Dimension will undergo major changes in leadership as students graduate and new students arise. To remain competitive in signing artists and releasing independent music, this process must be as smooth as possible. To aid this, we have begun work on an orientation process for new students to become workers within the label. This will prevent the label from going dormant as it has in the past. In the coming months we look to bring our internet presence operational. We will be signing more artists and releasing up to five albums per year in all different forms of media including video. We are looking to expand and grow as the months progress to allow room for new opportunities for our students. As our growth continues we look to begin partnering to gain our own space in the community. We also look to incorporate as a registered nonprofit and begin to search for grants to offset our finances. FDR expects big things in the future and may possibly expand to several different organizations under the First Dimension banner.
